I started mosaicland.com in 2008 to share my creative perspective and to help guitar players become better musicians. Mosaicland.com draws on my diverse experience as a performer (guitar, gamelan, kacapi, and glass instruments), composer (film, ensemble music), online & Royal Conservatory guitar teacher, and fiction writer. I feature an eclectic mix of musical influences and offer free guitar lessons, free musicianship lessons, and free music history lessons, all with a focus of how to be more creative and a better musician.
Mosaicland.com features music books and audio and includes occasional posts related to my non-musical life.
The idea for this website grew out from an earlier desire I had to create an interdisciplinary art center, when I was doing my Masters at Simon Fraser University in 1993. The centre had two main policies: to present all kinds of art, to generate enough money to support the less commercial productions.
I know, as an artist, the most difficult aspect to sustaining one’s artistic life is generating interest and support, which, at some point down the line, translates to revenue. The design of the centre would include a theatre for plays and readings, a cinema, a concert hall, a gallery for visual art, etc. But most important to its design would be space for businesses (a café, bar, restaurant, bookstore, convenience store, etc.) whose revenue would contribute to making the centre a feasible enterprise.
Of course, to realize a dream like this I would have to give up being an artist and devote my life to making such a huge space happen. At that time it was inconceivable because for me, art is vital. I need to create and have done so for the last thirty years. But now with the development of the internet, I feel I can begin to integrate creativity with putting together a virtual art centre, which I am calling Mosaicland.
The best way I can imagine starting the project is to build from the ground up. That is, with the work I have been a part of since moving to Toronto in 1978. – Bill Parsons
